It’s hard to believe I’ve already completed my first month at Valley of the Sun J. These weeks have been filled with conversations, introductions, new experiences, and, perhaps most importantly, opportunities to listen.
Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel spoke of radical amazement, the idea that we should never lose our capacity to find wonder in the world around us. It’s a powerful reminder that even in the familiar, there is always something new to discover if we remain curious enough to look.
I’ve been thinking about that a great deal this month.
Each day, I see another example of the extraordinary work happening at our J. I’ve met dedicated staff, enthusiastic members, proud parents, and people who care deeply about this community. What has struck me most is not simply the breadth of what happens here, but the many ways The J enriches people’s lives.
Perhaps you come to The J for a workout but have never considered taking an art class. Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn mahjong, work with a personal trainer, or simply enjoy a cup of coffee and conversation in our café. Sometimes, the most meaningful opportunities are right in front of us, whether it’s an activity we’ve never tried or a person we’ve yet to meet.
That’s part of what makes a JCC so special. Through exceptional programs, shared experiences, and everyday interactions, we build relationships, develop new interests, and strengthen our sense of belonging.
As I begin my second month, I hope you’ll embrace a little curiosity of your own. Explore another corner of The J, strike up a conversation with someone new, or share an idea about something you’d love to see us offer.
And if you see me walking around, please come say hello. I’d love to meet you and hear what makes The J meaningful to you.
Shabbat Shalom,
Dina
